We continued Performance Improvement Month at Trauma System News on June 4 with a Trauma Learning Break featuring two experts on trauma quality and PI.

In the first half of this session, Angie Chisolm of Optimal Healthcare Advisors presented “PDSA Workshop for Trauma PI Professionals”. During this 30-minute workshop, Angie:

• Reviews the basics of the PDSA quality improvement model
• Explains how to apply the PDSA approach in different trauma PI scenarios
• Discusses how to anticipate and avoid the common PDSA pitfalls
• Shows how to troubleshoot your PDSA when initial cycles yield mixed results

Then during our second half, experienced trauma program leader Jane McCormack answered attendees’ questions on trauma performance improvement. Jane shares her thoughts and guidance on:

• Implementing PI-driven process changes in an environment resistant to change
• How effective issue identification calls for “casting a wide net”
• Working with uncooperative specialty liaisons
• Working with providers on adherence to clinical guidelines
• Getting started as a new trauma PI coordinator

Jane McCormack
Trauma Program Consultant

Jane McCormack is an experienced trauma program manager who has worked in Level I, II and III trauma centers. She has a longstanding interest in trauma registry data and trauma data abstraction, and she believes that registry data is a driving force behind a successful trauma center. She is the coauthor of more than 20 peer-reviewed publications, most of which utilize registry data. Jane is currently working as a trauma consultant to a large healthcare system.
