October 2025 marks another powerful year of celebrating Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM). With a theme “Every Exceptional Ability Counts”, this month reminds us that talent comes in countless forms. Beyond challenges and labels, people with disabilities bring unique perspectives, creativity, and resilience to the workplace.

Let’s dive into why this celebration matters, how far we’ve come, and the steps we can still take toward inclusion.

Understanding Disability Employment Month

Disability Employment Month has been observed for decades, first emerging in the United States in 1945 as “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” Over time, it grew into a global recognition of the need to create inclusive opportunities for people of all abilities.

Purpose and Importance of the Observance

At its heart, the observance is about awareness, action, and appreciation. It shines a spotlight on challenges while celebrating the exceptional contributions of people with disabilities.

This year’s theme emphasizes looking beyond disabilities and instead focusing on what individuals can do. Every person has exceptional talents, whether it’s problem-solving, creativity, or technical expertise. By valuing these abilities, employers foster stronger, more innovative workplaces.

Breaking Down Myths About Disability and Work

Many still assume that people with disabilities can’t perform at the same level as others. This is an outdated and harmful misconception.

Exceptional Strengths in the Workplace

Studies show employees with disabilities are often more loyal, have lower turnover rates, and bring exceptional problem-solving skills to teams.

Just a summary of my journey: I was nonverbal until the age of 6, when I spoke my first word, and I didn’t begin using complete sentences until I was 10. From a very young age, I also displayed many of the common signs and characteristics of autism. Currently, I serve as a behavior specialist at the district level within a public school system in Florida and also as a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA).

In my role, I apply neurodiverse approaches that are helping to reshape how the field of behavior therapy is practiced. It’s an honor to support neurodiverse students and clients ranging from preschool through age 22. Only you have the power to shape your future, so don’t let anyone else decide it for you.

This is a note I received during ESY this past summer after spending a week volunteering during my work hours:
