May is National Trauma Awareness Month. I urge you to consider that traumatic injury is the leading cause of death of Americans aged 1 to 45; and for every American who dies as the result of their traumatic injuries, 11 more are hospitalized, often suffering life-long disabilities. More federal funding for research that can lessen this heavy toll is needed, not less. Research funded by the NIH, AHRQ, DoD, NSF and other federal agencies has led to advancements in drug regimens, therapeutic techniques and medical devices that save lives and reduce disability following traumatic injury–but large gaps in knowledge remain.
As a member of the trauma care and research community, I am writing to request that you reject the president’s proposed cuts to America’s healthcare research ecosystem. The president’s proposal–including a 40% cut to the National Institutes of Health, a 39% cut to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and a 57% cut to the National Science Foundation budget–would be disastrous for Americans’ health and scientific capabilities, dramatically slow U.S. medical research and innovation, and take away health and hope from Americans.
